Well, I ran Windows Vista on my Dell c840 a few years back until it died. What are the specs on yours?

Intel P4 2 GHz M
256 MBs of RAM, I had upgraded it to 768 MBs of RAM, I believe the max supported is 1.2 GBs
nVidia Geforce Go 440 Graphics 32 MBs (don't expect Aero Glass)
32 GB hard disk

Windows 7 should support it out of the box, but the performance might not be so satisfactory. Considering that Vista was a strain on it, Windows 7 might do better with the performance improvements.

If you can upgrade components like the memory, it should be good enough for basic task like web browsing and word processing.

If you decide to go with it, try customizing the installation to further optimize performance:
